A resume is a marketing tool that determines whether an employer will call you for an interview or pass you by. Even if you are
the perfect candidate for a position, someone less skilled might get the job of your dreams because their resume was written
more skillfully. It happens all the time. Studies have shown when people write about themselves, they tend to undersell. In
addition, 98% of resumes created by unskilled professionals lack several of the most important ingredients. As a result, many
opportunities are missed. Think of it this way; a $1 bill and a $100 bill are both just paper. Like a resume, their value is
determined by what is printed on that piece of paper.
Common Resume Pitfalls
Most people who write their own resumes are unsure of how to best present their strengths, downplay their weaknesses, and
appeal to employer needs. Common mistakes include the omission of important information and/or strategic sections, the
inclusion of irrelevant (and/or ill-advised) details, a shortage of keywords, a failure to emphasize transferable skills, a lack of a

resumes. I will explain how this acronym applies to effectively marketing your resume.
A – Attention or Awareness. Your resume must be written to attract the attention of employers. This can be accomplished
by knowing what the employers needs are. The needs of an employer can be found in their job description and/or website.
I – Raise the Employers Interest. Once you have determined the needs of an employer, your resume must demonstrate
how you meet their needs. This is based on your past career experiences that match the employers needs.
D – Desire. Now that you have attracted the employers’ attention by demonstrating you have what they need, you must now
convince the employers’ desire to meet you. Employers like to see quantifiable results. They like to see your accomplishments
and achievements.
A – Action. After you’ve captured the employers’ attention, interest, created desire, now you have to get the employers to
take action. Do ask for the opportunity to meet face-to-face. Be sure your contact information is correct and you are
